Patrolman William A. Kertin, with Emergency Squad 1, responded to a fire at 330 E 72nd Street in the early morning of July 28, 1929. As the rescue truck crossed 5th Avenue, it collided broadside with a bus rushing across 46th Street.
Seven passengers on the bus were injured, and four patrolmen were ejected from the truck. Patrolman Kertin was rushed to Polyclinic Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
