Speeding to a high-pressure gas leak, on November 25, 1946,
Emergency Squad 17 arrived at a residence on the Grand Central Parkway in the 103 Precinct.
They discovered a utility worker overcome by fumes, as they attempted to stop the deadly gas leak.
Then, while giving oxygen to the worker, a powerful explosion demolished the entire building.
Killed instantly were Patrolmen Peter J. Knudsen and Francis M. O’Hara. along with the repairman.
Lieutenant Charles R. Michie, in a heroic effort to save his patrolmen,
collapsed and was rushed to Queens General Hospital, but his life was also lost.
