Patrolman Charles Brereton Jr., the Squad 12 chauffer, had returned from an emergency and backed the rescue truck into quarters.  With the door open to observe progress, he collapsed, slipped from the cab and became pinned under the truck’s wheels. Despite immediate treatment by a passing doctor, Patrolman Brereton’s life could not be saved.
