DETECTIVE LUIS FERNANDEZ
10th Anniversary
Remembrance Ceremony
October 16, 2024

A very heart-rending tribute was held today, October 16, 2024, to remember the ten years since the passing of Detective Luis Fernandez, Emergency Service Squad 6. The gathering took place at the NYPD Aviation Hangar at Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn. Luis was taken by 9/11 illness suffered through his dedicated service during the rescue and recovery mission at Ground Zero.

Approximately 200 people were in attendance, including Luis’ two daughters and his loving wife Maritza, as well as many of his former ESU colleagues and a host other friends and relatives.

The event was opened with a prayer by Assistant Chief Chaplain, Monsignor Robert J Romano, followed by a spectacular rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, magnificently delivered by Police Officer Brianna Fernandez, proud daughter of Maritza an Luis. Briana is assigned to her dad’s prior command, the 9th Precinct.

Passionate speeches were delivered, each of which were given in an atmosphere of reverent silence, with emotional love and respect. Assistant Chief Carlos Valdez, Commanding Officer, ESU, spoke from his heart and soul recalling the dedication and self-sacrifice of a great E-Man.

Retired DEA President Paul DiGiacomo offered a glowing tribute to Detective Fernandez noting with the highest NYPD honor to the late detective’s work as a DEA Delegate.

Luis’ dear friend and former ESU boss, retired Lieutenant Richard Lobasso, spoke of Luis with deep, endearing friendship and praise, for the love and treasure that his wife and two daughters meant to him and formed the foundation of his life’s existence. It was as touching and rich as anyone could express.

Detective Fernandez’ wife and daughters concluded with words that had no equal as they relayed their childhood and family life that could only be defined as second to none.

A beautiful tribute. Nice to see so many attending. I hope Luis was able to see it and may he continue to rest in peace.
