  20th ANNUAL REMA

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

APRIL 29, 2023

Even the cold and rainy weather couldn’t stop the nearly 300 active and retired members of REMA and their families and friends from keeping their promise to “Never Forget”. From as far west as California, south to Florida and even from the frozen tundra of Maine, we all gathered inside the NYPD Aviation hangar at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York to honor the memories of 95 members of Special Operations who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving as New York City Police Officers.
Starting the event was our very own, Police Office Brianna Fernandez, who BEAUTIFULLY sang our National Anthem. Assistant Chief Chaplain Monsignor Romano  followed with the Invocation. After the dais was introduced the reading of the Memorial Roll Call by retired ESU Lt. Al Baker commenced.

The ceremony was followed with the presenting of checks to the winners of the first annual Assistant Chief Walter E. Klotzback REMA Scholarship Award. CLICK HERE to read the winning essays. Then the surprise of the day: the presentation of a custom statue of Saint Michael to retired Police Officer Jeannie Kelly, for her selfless and tireless work of advocating for those first responders effected by their response to the attacks on 9/11. The Pipes and Drums of the Emerald Society of the NYPD closed the ceremony with their beautiful playing of God Bless America.

Also in attendance was former 23 precinct Police Officer and Hollywood actor Mr. Hank Garrett, along with his wife Deanna-Marie. Lunch followed with OUTSTANDING entertainment from the NYPD Band which did an outstanding job!

REMA would like to thank Chief of SOD Wilson Aramboles for allowing the use of the facilities, and the following Commanding Officers of the sub units: Assistant Chief Valdez, ESU; DI Soviero, Aviation; Insp. Russo, Harbor; DC D’Adamo, SRG and Insp. Gelbman, Mounted. And finally, this couldn’t have been the success it was without the input and guidance of the NYPD Ceremonial Unit. REMA thanks them and all those who volunteered and attended, making the 20th annual Day of Remembrance a huge success.
