On September 11, 2001, pure evil struck in the worst attack on American soil in history. Two passenger airliners hijacked by al quaeda terrorists, were deliberately crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. As thousands of innocents tried to flee the deadly inferno, Police rushed in. Rescue teams were deployed to the North and South Towers, but while guiding the terrified citizens to safety, tragedy struck again. One by one the towers collapsed without warning. Lower Manhattan became covered in dust. The fires would burn 100 days. Two million tons of rubble would fill the foundations. Twenty three NYPD Officers died in the destruction, including 14 brave and heroic members of Emergency Service. Over twenty five thousand innocent lives were led to safety. The 14 ESU heroes died as they lived: They sacrificed their own lives valiantly so that others could survive.
