While on foot patrol May 1, 1964, Patrolman Edmond G. Schrempf and his partner stopped a suspicious vehicle on Pitkin Avenue in Brooklyn. When the Patrolman reached through the window to secure the ignition keys, the driver floored the gas pedal.
While being dragged with the speeding car, Patrolman Schrempf held on for four and a half blocks, before he fell beneath the wheels of the car and was fatally injured.
