THE 5TH OF MAY
THE AMERICAN WAY
We remember the 5th of May and Admiral Alan Shepard Jr. who in 1961 was the first American in space. His navy career began on a destroyer during World War Two in the South Pacific. After the war he went to flight school which led him not only into space but to the surface of the moon, being the 5th human to walk, and play golf, on the moon as part of the Apollo 14 crew. As he sat in the Freedom 7 capsule, problems developed, but he stayed cool. “I’ve been in here more than three hours. I’m a hell of a lot cooler than you guys. Why don’t you just fix your little problem and light this candle?” They eventually did and off he went on the historic mission. He landed in the Atlantic and was brought home on the carrier Lake Champlain. Shepard passed in 1998. Let’s raise a glass and toast a true American hero.
